Y9 Radio Plays
This Year 9 class was detailed to do a writing module for the winter half term at the end of 2006. After tackling persuading, informing and arguing, the last section of the module let this energetic group of students loose on Writing to Entertain. The teaching and learning focussed on dialogue, character and genre – aiming to harness their natural ability for sharp, witty, imaginative verbal interplay. The final goal was to write and record, in pairs, a mini radio duologue inspired by a choice of three different scenarios. They were to create two original characters and choose a genre for the piece.
Presented below are three of the most interesting pieces:
The Saxo Dealer – by Usman Riaz
(Read by Usman Riaz, Zafran Ul Haq and Mr. Anderson)
The students opted to invent their own scenario and came up with this naturalistic piece, which exhibits a keen eye for the everyday – just a man buying a car. Or is it?
The Nine-Tailed Fox – by Abdi Jama
(Read by Abdi Jama, Aqib Rehman and Liam Waddingham)
Clearly inspired by Japanese anime, this was another piece where the students extended themselves by inventing an original scenario. The result is an interesting excerpt of a fantasy epic.
Ozzy the Annoying Wizard – by Max McDonald and Stefan-John Bright
(Read by Max McDonald and Abdi Jama)
Another one straight from the mind of the students, who again opted not to choose to use any of the pre-set scenarios. Instead, they concocted this dreamlike slice of surrealism involving a wizard, the White House and nuclear-powered bag pipes.
And that’s your lot. We had fun learning how to construct character, create believable dialogue and absorb the rudiments of genre. We had fun grappling with MP3 players, microphones, and limited recording time. So we hope you have fun listening.
