English at Abbeydale Grange School
With
at least 42 different languages and more different cultures and
races at AGS, English teaching has to be dynamic and innovative
to meet the real challenges of the 21st century. The success of
the English Department does not just reflect the staff but the
energy, ideas and different perspectives the students bring to
the subject.
We
build teaching around both modern and classic texts which reflect
the backgrounds and cultures of our students. They have a lot to
say and express and our aim is to allow them to do so and succeed
in the wider literate world. Outside speakers, writers, poets,
film producers and documentary-makers are often in our classrooms.
English teaching at AGS has to be creative in order to get the
students to OWN English Language, literature and media and for
themselves.
We
are very proud that a Year 11 student in 2005 achieved one of the
five highest marks nationally for GCSE English Language!
