English as an Additional Language at Abbeydale Grange School
The
EAL department serves a growing number of students for whom English
is not their first language. Many of these students speak more
than one language at home, inside and outside school. Their expertise
in languages, their knowledge of other parts of the world, their
experiences of life have a big impact on the school in that all
students, teachers and subject areas benefit from its cultural
diversity.
The
6 teachers in the EAL department teach small groups of students
English Language, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills
and develops the communication skills of listening and speaking.
In addition we work in the mainstream classes supporting students
in all their different subjects. This support can involve preparation
for answering exam questions, translating the mainstream teachers'
words, helping to develop writing skills and so on. All of this
ensures that our EAL students are involved in the mainstream classes
both academically and socially.
Many
of our EAL students, some of whom arrived at the school with no
English, have gone on to further and higher education. Others have
gone into the world of work. We have also benefited from post Year
11 EAL students who have returned to our school to help in classes.
They are excellent role models for all students.
