Overall Aims
To help students gain the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society.
Specification:
Moral and Ethical Issue
In exploring and developing roles within an improvisation, students will examine the moral and ethical decisions a character has to make in any given situation. Students will also explore the issues within the context of the play, and the influence of the conditions in which it was created and performed .
Social Issues
Within group work, mutual respect is salient in building a positive and supportive environment in which to develop and respond to creative ideas. The social conditions in which characters are portrayed within a piece of drama are an important contextual consideration.
Cultural Issues
Drama should reflect the cultural conditions in which it was created and performed and students need to be aware of these influences.
General Aims
To promote creative, independent, critical thinking through levels of continuous control, complexity and performance skills. Incorporating dramatic technique (The Explorative Strategies, Drama Medium and the Elements of Drama) and demonstration of theatre craft (Costume, Makeup, Set Design, Lighting and Sound). It is hoped that a sound base in knowledge and skills will be achieved through a variety of learning styles. Identification of student’s learning needs will be a priority target and opportunity will be given through lesson planning to cater for auditory and physically involved learning. A respect for standards will be encouraged throughout.
Schemes of Work
These will follow an established plan or a thematic approach which will provide stability, continuity and natural progress from Y7 to Y9. Repeated reference to previous learning with the onus on understanding, demonstration will be a key factor to the course. Students should at the end of Y9 be fully conversant with all the necessary techniques and skills to proceed to GCSE Drama in Y10. Themes and their specific content are to be reviewed termly and negotiated with other departments to include and reflect students’ general learning.
