Citizenship Studies at Abbeydale Grange School
Citizenship is about learning to live together as a community. This course should give students the knowledge they need to play their part in society. For example:

What their rights are if they want to return a CD to a shop?

How to vote or at what age they can?
-
How does the law protect them?
Understanding how society works helps students to live better within and give them the power to help and protect themselves and others.
There are two parts to the Citizenship Course:
Part 1 - Citizenship Today
This is divided into three themes:
- Human Rights
- Communities in the UK
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Laws
- Power, Politics and the Media
- How can we change society?
- Voluntary Groups
- Pressure Groups
- Voting
- Media
- The Global Village
- How does the economy work?
- Business and our lives
- Environment
Students sit an exam based on this part of the course. They will be expected to be able to Identify, Explain and Offer an opinion on various topics. Students are encouraged to back up their opinions with what they have learnt.
Part 2 - Participating In Society
During this part of the course students are expected to take part in a citizenship activity. This will be the course work for the students and will make up 40% of their total marks.
As part of this students will:
- Choose from the list of given activities.
- Describe how they planned the activity.
- Write about how they carried out the activity.
- Provide evidence of their activity and how they went about it.
- Describe how well they thought their activity went.
- Evaluate (decide) whether it was a useful citizenship activity.
Students will build up a portfolio which will be assessed towards their GCSE.
The portfolio must contain:
- A Front Sheet saying what the activity is
- A four-page response form with the following sections;
- Section One; Planning
- Section Two; Activity log
- Section Three; Communication with supporting evidence.
- Section Four; Evolution
Students can use a variety of different methods to support their activities including; video clips, photos, witness statements, written work and oral presentations.
