Art and Design at Abbeydale Grange School

Many of our projects draw on the rich cultural diversity of Abbeydale Grange.  Besides the achievements and enthusiasm of our students, we are fortunate in having an accomplished team of artists whose individual talents encompass an amazing array of skills.

The Art Block comprises two large teaching rooms and a smaller workshop where we can accommodate visiting artists in residence on special projects or individuals creating larger scale work, as well as GCSE exhibitions.  The textile room in the main building has further displays of GCSE Art Textiles.

At Key Stage 3 we aim to deliver four projects a year, each of which take their stimulus from aspects of traditional, multi-cultural or contemporary art, craft and design, (all staff contribute to the continual development of our visual resources).  A wide range of 2D and 3D materials is introduced throughout the Key Stage and at GCSE we offer 3 options:

  • Unendorsed - A single award that covers a variety of media.
  • Textiles - A single award that includes creative techniques including quilting, dyeing, painting and appliqué as well as computer embroidery.
  • Applied Art - Double Award where students work on art, craft or design disciplines making links with contemporary practitioners.

Extra-curricular activities are a vital feature and cover many areas from darkroom skills to creative textiles.  With the improvement of our IT facilities we plan to extend these to include Photoshop and animation for staff and students.

The Craft Skills workshop proved popular, teaching techniques from paper making to batik.  We aim to build on skills learned this year by setting up an Arts and Crafts business funded by the Enterprise Scheme.
