Soundtracking Sheffield

Aim Higher and G&T Y9 students were lucky enough to work with established Soundtrack Musician Nigel Humberstone of In The Nursery on a soundtracking and moving image project on the theme of Sheffield.

The project was coordinated by Vicky Morris from Cube Young People’s Magazine and was funded by South Sheffield City Learning Centre.

Students planned, shot, edited and produced original music and moving image for a 1 minute film entitled ‘Soundtracking Sheffield’. Groups went out shooting to specific contrasting areas of Sheffield including around the city centre and the Peak District.  The idea was to then encourage different explorations of sound relating to the very different environments and landscapes of Sheffield.

Editing Filming

The intention of the project was to highlight the potential of video and sound technologies to students through hands-on skills and to create a better awareness of how sound and image come together in popular media.  The theme was to express feelings on Sheffield through use of interesting media communications, rather than through word descriptions.

8 films were completed which were shown in the school foyer.  Contact Joe Gradwell for a copy of the final showreel which was showcased at the Showroom cinema during the Showcomotion Young People’s Film Festival 2006.

The final film can be seen below (may take some time to load):
